  • Walk About Zion  & Death Valley 2011 (Region 8), 23 October to 2 November 2011 by Wendell Nunes and Judy Willis.

    Hi Friends!!!

You may have seen Wendell's notice on the CyberRally. He was proposing that the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque be the launching off point for another "Walkabout" which will end up in Death Valley in November. I tried to get in touch with Wendell regarding some dates, but I haven't heard back from him yet. I discussed this with Judy W. I wanted to make reservations in Zion. We had a lot of fun there last year, but we went there too late in the year. Judy reminded me that it's best to get to Death Valley early for a number of reasons. Some folks will want to stop in Las Vegas before Death Valley, so it would be best to be in Zion near the end of October, then head toward Death Valley.

I took a look at the reservations online. www.recreation.gov Watchman Campground is where we stayed last year and Loop A is preferred for a number of reasons. However, there is also loop B. I found that October is already filling up. I reserved a site for ten days. #A010 23 Oct 2011 to 02 Nov 2011. The only risk is $10, if you cancel or change up to 48 hours before your arrival date, so I chose a longer window of time than may be needed. If you google Utah national parks, you will see that you can travel from park to park after leaving ABQ and end up in Zion. I checked on reservations for Bryce Canyon. They appear to be first come first served. I think this may be the case at that time of year for several of the parks, so having reservations at one base camp seemed to be a wise idea. I don't wish to step on anyone's toes, but I thought maybe I could be a spark plug for the Solo faction and propose these dates. There are later dates avalable, but earlier dates are sporadic, at least in Loop A. Much of Loop A is already reserved for these dates too. NOW... the disclaimer... Wait for it!!... I never really know if I'll be able to follow through on my plans, but my track record is getting better.

I'm hoping a few people will make reservations now and that these will fall into line with the Walkabout plans. For me, making a decision about the Balloon Fiesta meant taking a look at the plans from there on out. That's just me. I believe those with National Park Passes (not me, unfortunately) get a discount on their campsite, so it is more than reasonable. It's worth the $10 risk to know you have a nice place to stay. It is VERY NICE!
